Aorangi Blush Artichoke Garlic

Aorangi 'Blush Artichoke' garlic is mild smelling with a crisp texture and medium to strong flavour. It has a storage life of up to five months and is grown right here at our nursery.

We're not certain of the exact origin or cultivar name of this garlic but it is an Artichoke type. Artichoke garlics are so named as they look similar to an artichoke in cross section. They are soft-neck garlics (no central stem) and have nine to ten large cloves in each bulb. We've named it Aorangi Blush Artichoke as the bulb skins often have a pink blush.

Artichoke garlics are suitable for growing in any areas of New Zealand and are easier to grow and much higher yielding than Printanor, the more common garlic grown in New Zealand.

Break the bulbs into individual cloves and plant them in rows 2-3cm deep with 8-10cm between cloves. If you have more than one row, space the rows 20cm apart to make sure all the plants get plenty of light.

Aorangi Blush Artichoke is best planted from mid May onwards, and should be harvested in mid to late December. Don't go by the old 'plant on shortest day, harvest on the longest day' theory. Plant according to what each variety needs and harvest it when it is ready.

Fertilise with general purpose fertiliser in early September and again in early November to boost the plants for their final growth push. No fertiliser is needed at planting time.

• Joe: Mild smelling with a crisp texture, stronger flavour than printanor.
• Marty: Grows OK in Christchurch, stronger flavour than Printanor and NZ Early Purple.
