French Shallots

French shallots are milder and sweeter than onions and can be used in any cooking where onions are used if you prefer a milder taste. They're fabulous in Asian cooking and beautiful slow-roasted to caramelise them. Our shallots are grown right here at our nursery in the Manawatu and they are suitable for planting in all areas of New Zealand.

Plant them in rows with the top quarter above the ground, spaced 12 cm apart. You can plant them any time from March through to July but the secret to getting them to make a good cluster of bulbs is to plant earlier. Planting in by early May will give much a larger cluster of bulbs and higher production, with up to five or six bulbs for each one planted.

Fertilise with general purpose fertiliser in early September and again in early November to boost them for their final growth push.

Please note that garlic and shallots are shipped from March - June separately from flower bulbs and freight is charged separately from other bulb orders.
